Last year, we took a deep dive into barrels. And I mean deep. We searched high and low for all types of barrels and learned a lot about the spirits and wine they contained. We ended up finding a variety of American, French, and German oak barrels. They were different from anything we had ever done before, but we loved them. Each barrel was unique, robust, and had a life of its own.

This year, we continue the story. This lot marks the second fill, meaning this is the second time these barrels have seen tequila. Our ongoing collaboration with our Master Distiller, Felipe Camarena, and his incredible team at El Pandillo has allowed us to experiment and develop this single barrel program, for which we are incredibly thankful. Felipe’s deep knowledge of barrel selection and care has been a game-changer. His stories and expertise have truly inspired us.

Here’s what guided us in picking the barrels:

• Ensuring the spirit’s exceptional quality.
• Leveraging the cooperage’s expertise in selecting and crafting the barrel.
• The specific origin of the wood.

These factors were key to creating an amazing aged tequila.

For our 2024 release, you will be able to see the difference in the reposado tequila when using the barrel a second time. We filled them with Volans Tequila at 45% ABV and let the tequila rest for nearly the same duration as the 2023 lots, around four months. The only exception is that we had two barrels we let age for an additional three months. There are ten barrels in total, made mostly of American white oak, with a few French and German oak barrels. These barrels had previously held bourbon and California wine.

Even though all the tequila started as the same blanco, each barrel has its own story to tell. This variety shows just how much barrel aging can influence the flavor and demonstrates the complexity a reposado can achieve. We all know Felipe Camarena and Volans have that signature lighter barrel touch. The 2024 Volans Single Barrels allow the agave to shine through while each barrel imparts its own signature on the reposado. We hope you continue to enjoy these reposados as much as we do.
